Do you need an air quality assessment?

Air Quality
in Gloucester

Gloucester City Council has declared three Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) for annual mean Nitrogen Dioxide: Barton Street AQMA (in the city centre) and Priory Road AQMA (on the A417) both declared in 2005, and Painswick Road AQMA (in the city centre, consisting of a further section of Barton Street) declared in 2007. Gloucester City Council’s Latest Air Quality Annual Status Report (ASR) shows that the main source of air pollution in Gloucester are road traffic emissions from the major roads (primarily the A417, A430 and A38) which connect the city with the main highway network.

No exceedances of the annual mean nitrogen dioxide objective were recorded within Gloucester during 2020. Gloucester City Council’s Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) contains the actions that have been approved in relation to reducing Nitrogen Dioxide concentrations.

When do you need an Air Quality Assessment in Gloucester

An air quality assessment in Gloucester will be required where there is a need to inform the decision-making with regard to development. It is reasonable to expect that an assessment will be required where there is a risk of a significant air quality effect, either from a new development causing an air quality impact or creating exposure to high concentrations of pollutants for new residents.

If you have a development with more than 10 residential units or more than 1,000 metres square of floor space, then an air quality assessment is a requirement for planning applications.

Air Quality Assessments for planning applications

Haze Environmental follow the relevant technical guidance for all our assessments, therefore you can be confident our assessments are robust and accurate. In particular, we use the IAQM guidance on Planning for Air Quality:
