Do you need an air quality assessment?

Air Quality
in Warwick

Warwick District Council has declared five Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) for 1-hour mean and annual mean Nitrogen Dioxide which cover properties along High Street, Jury Street, Bowling Green Street, Theatre Street, Northgate, The Butts, Smith Street, Church St and part of Saltisford, and also including a number of nearby properties. Warwick District Council’s Latest Air Quality Annual Status Report (ASR) shows that Road traffic emissions are the main source of air pollution in the District of Warwick.

No exceedances of the annual mean or 1-hour mean nitrogen dioxide objective were recorded within Warwick during 2021. Warwick District Council’s Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) updated draft is under preparation but has not yet been published. The intention of the AQAP is to set out measures that Warwick District Council intends to put in place in pursuit of compliance with the objectives.

Warwick District Council also have in place an Air Quality and Planning Supplementary Planning Document. This planning document aims to simplify the consideration of air quality impacts associated with development schemes and focus on the incorporation of mitigation at the design stage. The document also aims to provide clarity to developers and define sustainability in air quality terms.

When do you need an Air Quality Assessment in Warwick

An air quality assessment in Warwick will be required where there is a need to inform the decision-making with regard to development. It is reasonable to expect that an assessment will be required where there is a risk of a significant air quality effect, either from a new development causing an air quality impact or creating exposure to high concentrations of pollutants for new residents.

If you have a development with more than 10 residential units or more than 1,000 metres square of floor space, then an air quality assessment is a requirement for planning applications.
