The whole of Worcester City has been declared an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) for annual mean Nitrogen Dioxide. Worcester City Council’s Latest Air Quality Annual Status Report (ASR) shows that poor areas of air quality within Worcester, typically coincide with the strategic road network in and around the City Centre in proximity to sensitive residential receptors.

No exceedances of the annual mean nitrogen dioxide objective were recorded within Worcester City during 2021. Worcester Regulatory Services have also produced a countywide Air Quality Action Plan, which details measures to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.

When do you need an Air Quality Assessment in Worcester

An air quality assessment in Worcester will be required where there is a need to inform the decision-making with regard to development. Due to the presence of the AQMA, it is reasonable to expect that an assessment will be required as there is a risk of a significant air quality effect, either from a new development causing an air quality impact or creating exposure to high concentrations of pollutants for new residents.

If you have a development with more than 10 residential units or more than 1,000 metres square of floor space, then an air quality assessment is a requirement for planning applications.
