Haze Environmental Analyzes Air Quality Planning Policy at RTCA25
Haze Environmental was pleased to attend the Routes to Clean Air 2025 conference, returning after a few years away from the event.
The conference brought together professionals from across the air quality sector to discuss the progress made in improving air quality, the challenges that remain, and the need to keep clean air higher on the policy, planning and public health agenda.
For Chloe Fellows, Founder and Director of Haze Environmental, the event was also an important opportunity to reconnect with others in the air quality community and reflect on how the sector continues to evolve.
There were a number of insightful presentations across the two days, highlighting both the improvements that have been achieved and the continued need for action. While there has been clear progress in understanding and managing air pollution, the conference was also a strong reminder that air quality still needs to be considered earlier and more meaningfully in decision-making.
One of the most powerful moments of the conference was the interview with Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, who shared her experience following the death of her daughter, Ella. Ella was the first person in the UK to have air pollution officially listed as a cause of death, after her asthma was made worse by excessive air pollution.
Chloe said:
“As a mother of two young girls, hearing Rosamund speak was incredibly powerful. No parent should ever have to go through that, and no child or adult should lose their life because of dirty air. It was a very clear reminder of why this work matters.”
As a member of the Institute of Air Quality Management, Chloe also had the opportunity to hear about forthcoming guidance expected over the next 6 to 12 months, including proposed updates to the Planning for Air Quality guidance.
These changes are expected to influence how air quality is considered within the planning process and reflect the growing need to move away from a tick-box approach. For Haze Environmental, this aligns strongly with the company’s focus on early, proportionate and health-led air quality advice.
Air quality should not be left as an afterthought. Early conversations can help identify risks, inform better design, and support healthier places for the people who live, work and learn there.
